The Edo State Police Command has initiated rescue operations following the abduction of Tony Aziegbemi, the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state. Aziegbemi was taken captive by gunmen shortly after a meeting with Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, at the Government House in Benin City.

In response to this alarming incident, the Edo State Government has confirmed its collaboration with security agencies to secure the release of the kidnapped PDP Chairman. The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Chidi Nwabuzor, has urged residents of Edo State to provide any useful information that could aid in the swift rescue of Aziegbemi.

Expressing shock over the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Funsho Adegboye, has instructed tactical team leaders to coordinate rescue efforts in conjunction with local vigilantes and hunters. The primary objective is to ensure the safe return of the victim without harm. The Commissioner has also appealed to law-abiding citizens to assist the police by providing any pertinent information that may lead to the apprehension of the perpetrators and the successful rescue of Aziegbemi.

According to reports from the driver of Aziegbemi, who witnessed the kidnapping, the incident occurred on the night of March 15, 2024, shortly after the PDP Chairman attended a meeting at the Edo State Government House. While returning home, armed men intercepted their vehicle near Bishop Dr. J.O.E. Edokpolor Boulevard Junction in Benin City. Aziegbemi, fearing for his life, exited his vehicle and attempted to flee on foot, but the assailants caught up with him, forced him back into his vehicle, and drove him away to an undisclosed location.

The Edo State Police Command has issued a press release informing the public about the abduction and assuring proactive measures to secure Aziegbemi's release. The Commissioner of Police has emphasized the urgency of the situation and urged citizens to collaborate with law enforcement authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure the safe return of the kidnapped PDP Chairman.
