Conrad Utaan Advocates Court Action to Reform PDP, Takes Iyorchia Ayu to Task

Conrad Utaan, a prominent figure within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has emphasized the necessity of introducing fresh leadership to steer the party towards a resurgence in Nigerian politics. In a recent interview on Channels Television's Politics Today, Utaan articulated his stance, highlighting the stagnation of the party under the existing leadership.

Expressing his bid to replace Iyorchia Ayu as the National Chairman of the PDP, Utaan asserted that the current cadre of leaders within the party had grown complacent, emphasizing the imperative of injecting new vigor and innovative thinking into the party's operations.

In response to inquiries regarding the suitability of a candidate lacking national leadership experience, Utaan underscored the urgency for revitalization, stating, "That is exactly what the party requires at this time; new energy, new thinking to take the party to a new level." He pointed out the diminishing influence of established figures like former Vice President Namadi Sambo and ex-governor of Kaduna State, Ahmed Makarfi, attributing it to internal discord and egotism.

Furthermore, Utaan addressed his legal confrontation with Ayu, explaining that his actions aimed at safeguarding the PDP from deterioration rather than merely seeking personal advancement. He clarified that his intervention, culminating in Ayu's suspension and subsequent removal from office, stemmed from the necessity to restore order and stability within the party.

While acknowledging his role in Ayu's ousting, Utaan reframed it as a critical intervention to instill discipline and coherence within the party's ranks. Despite the ensuing leadership vacuum, he emphasized the importance of his actions in fostering a semblance of stability within the PDP, paving the way for potential leadership transitions.

As the PDP navigates its post-Ayu era under the interim leadership of Umar Damagum, Utaan's efforts underscore a broader push for reform and rejuvenation within the party's hierarchy. With his commitment to effecting change and revitalizing the PDP's fortunes, Utaan's actions signal a pivotal moment in the party's evolution and its quest for political relevance.
