Ned Nwoko, the Senator representing Delta North, has recently revealed that he was able to secure a substantial sum of N1 billion for various constituency projects. This disclosure came to light during a conversation with Seun Okinbaloye on the 'Mic On Podcast' hosted by Channels Television.
The Senator's statement comes amid growing interest in the allocation of funds for constituency projects, sparked by revelations made by Senator Jarigbe Agom-Jarigbe, representing Cross River North. Senator Jarigbe had disclosed during Senate deliberations that certain "senior" senators had received as much as N500 million for their projects.
Responding to inquiries about the amount he received for constituency projects, Senator Nwoko confirmed, "Of course I did. But these are projects for my people and that is why I am here."
However, Senator Nwoko expressed his preference for a fixed allocation for constituency projects for all senators. He noted that the current system relies heavily on personal influence and connections to secure funding for projects, which he believes is not ideal.
In his words, "The way it is done now, you basically rely on your weights and contacts to see what you can get for your people... I’d have preferred a situation where we all know what we are getting — you don’t need to lobby for it and it is a standard thing."
Senator Nwoko emphasized that the funds allocated for constituency projects are not for personal use but are intended for the development of infrastructure and community initiatives within his senatorial district. These projects include the construction of roads, provision of water facilities, and implementation of training programs, all aimed at benefiting the constituents.
He further advocated for transparency in the allocation process, suggesting that every senator should be informed of the funds allocated to their respective districts, and such information should be made public.
Meanwhile, Senator Ali Ndume, the Chief Whip of the Senate, offered insights into the disparity in project allocation, attributing it to the hierarchical structure within the Senate. He remarked that "some animals are more equal than others," implying that certain senators, particularly presiding and principal officers, receive larger allocations due to their positions.
In conclusion, Senator Ned Nwoko's revelation sheds light on the allocation of funds for constituency projects and underscores the importance of transparency and equity in the distribution of resources for the development of communities across Nigeria.
