Senator Adetokunbo Abiru Elected Chairman of Southern Senators Forum

In a swift response to recent developments in the Senate, the Southern Senators have reestablished their forum, appointing Senator Adetokunbo Abiru from Lagos East as the Chairman. This decision comes on the heels of the suspension of Senator Abdul Ningi, the former Chairman of the Northern Senators Forum, just 24 hours prior.

The revival of the Southern Senators Forum marks a significant shift in the Senate's dynamics and underscores the importance of regional representation and collaboration in legislative matters. Senator Abiru, who assumes the role of Chairman, brings with him a wealth of experience and a commitment to advancing the interests of the southern states.

The meeting convened by the Southern Senators saw the participation of 51 senators representing 17 southern states. Among the key decisions made during the gathering was the election of six executives under Senator Abiru's leadership. This move reflects a unified effort among the southern senators to strengthen their collective voice and address pertinent issues affecting their constituencies.

Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, the former Chairman, highlighted the historical significance of the Southern Senators Forum, noting that it has been in existence since the 9th Senate. However, due to his responsibilities as the Senate Majority Leader, he was unable to provide the necessary leadership. With Senator Abiru at the helm, the forum is poised to take on a more active role in shaping legislative discourse and policy formulation.

In his inaugural address, Senator Abiru expressed his commitment to fostering cohesion among southern senators and facilitating constructive dialogue on national issues. He emphasized the importance of collaboration with the Northern Senators Forum to address the challenges facing the nation and chart a course towards progress and development.

As the 10th Senate enters a new phase with the reinvigoration of the Southern Senators Forum, there is optimism that this platform will serve as a catalyst for positive change and effective representation. Senator Abiru's leadership signals a renewed focus on regional cooperation and underscores the Senate's commitment to advancing the interests of all Nigerians, regardless of geographic location.
