House of Representatives Express Concern Over Suspension of Minister Betta Edu, Urges Swift Investigation

The House of Representatives convened on Wednesday, expressing apprehension regarding the suspension of Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Betta Edu, and its potential impact on social investment programs. In a motion presented on the house floor, Honourable Billi Osaruwa, representing the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, voiced concern over the interruption of these crucial programs due to the minister's suspension.

Osaruwa emphasized that the suspension of the minister has led to the cessation of social investment programs at a time when the nation is grappling with rising hunger and inflation. The interruption of these programs, particularly amid such challenging economic conditions, is deemed detrimental to the welfare of the populace and the nation at large.

Moreover, the House expressed reservations regarding the proposal to transfer the management of the social investment programs to the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun. Members of the House deemed this recommendation as irregular, highlighting the need for the federal government to promptly conduct an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the suspension of Minister Betta Edu.

In addition to calling for a swift investigation, the House proposed that President Bola Tinubu direct the Minister of State to Betta Edu to oversee the implementation of the social investment programs on an interim basis. This measure aims to ensure the continuity of these essential initiatives without undue interruption due to administrative changes.

Furthermore, the House advocated for the postponement of plans to establish a steering committee under the supervision of the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun. Members argued that such a move would contravene the provisions of the act establishing the social investment program. Instead, they urged for the continuation of the program under the supervision of the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs or her designated representative.

The decision to suspend Minister Betta Edu stemmed from allegations of financial impropriety, particularly concerning a purported ₦585 million scandal. The widespread public outcry following these allegations prompted President Bola Tinubu to take action and suspend the minister pending further investigation.

As the nation grapples with the challenges of economic instability and social welfare, the House of Representatives underscores the importance of maintaining the integrity and continuity of social investment programs. The call for a swift investigation into the suspension of Minister Betta Edu reflects the House's commitment to ensuring accountability and transparency in governance, particularly in matters concerning public funds and social welfare initiatives.
