Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Abia State have arrested 10 suspected of engaging in illegal mining activities

Operatives from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Abia State have taken into custody 10 individuals suspected of engaging in illegal mining activities. The arrests, which occurred on February 16, 2024, were announced by the State Commandant, Usman Alfadarai, during a parade of the suspects in Umuahia.

The apprehensions were conducted in strict adherence to the directives of the Commandant General, Ahmed Abubakar, who has ordered a crackdown on illegal mining activities nationwide. According to Alfadarai, the illegal mining activities pose a threat to the nation's economy, making it imperative to bring an end to such practices.

Highlighting the negative impact of illegal mining not only on the economy but also on the environment and residents, Alfadarai emphasized the need for strong measures. The NSCDC, in line with its commitment to enforcing global best practices in the mining sector, recently conducted a profiling of mining sites in Abia to identify approved locations and licensed miners.

The arrests serve as a stern warning to those engaged in illegal mining, signaling that such activities will no longer be tolerated. Alfadarai called on stakeholders in the sector to ensure compliance with valid licenses and approved mining sites. This precautionary measure aims to prevent revenue losses and environmental hazards associated with unauthorized mining operations.

The State Commandant assured the public that the arrested suspects would undergo a thorough investigation, and upon its conclusion, they would face charges in a court of competent jurisdiction. Among the items recovered from the suspects were a truck with the number plate AAH 631XA, shovels, product samples, and head pans.

This enforcement effort aligns with the NSCDC's commitment to upholding the rule of law, safeguarding the economy, and protecting the environment from the detrimental effects of illegal mining. As the investigation proceeds, it emphasizes the importance of adhering to legal and ethical standards in the mining sector to ensure sustainable and responsible practices.
