Ahead of the forthcoming governorship election in Edo State scheduled for September 2024, a non-political entity known as the Edo Obidient Movement has declared its dissociation from the Labour Party (LP) and its gubernatorial candidate, Olumide Akpata.
The Edo Obidient Movement clarified that its engagement with the LP during the 2023 general elections was solely based on its support for the party's presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Initially, the movement had rallied behind Obi due to his distinguished track record in public service. However, in a recent press conference held at the NUJ Secretariat in Benin City, the spokesperson for the group, Ikhuenbor Figo, emphasized a shift in their stance.
Figo expressed disappointment in the LP's performance, portraying it as an inadequate alternative to the dominant political parties in Nigeria. The movement particularly criticized the LP's primary election process, condemning what they perceived as disgraceful and unpatriotic conduct by leaders at various levels.
Consequently, the Edo Obidient Movement officially disavowed any association with the LP and its gubernatorial candidate for the 2024 election, including campaign activities such as street rallies and fitness walks.
Moreover, the group urged Peter Obi to take proactive measures to reform the leadership of the LP ahead of the 2027 presidential elections. While affirming their unwavering support for Obi, they stressed the importance of purging the party of detrimental elements.
Looking forward, the Edo Obidient Movement announced plans to reveal the political party and candidate they will endorse for the upcoming Edo governorship election in the following weeks.
