The Zamfara State House of Assembly suspended eight members and disbanded all House Standing Committees

The Zamfara State House of Assembly took a significant step on Monday as it suspended eight members and disbanded all House Standing Committees. The move was initiated based on allegations that the suspended lawmakers were involved in orchestrating an attempt to cause discord within the House by organizing an unauthorized plenary session.

The suspension request was presented by the House Majority Leader, Bello Tsafe, and received support from the Deputy Speaker Adamu Nura, according to a statement from the House spokesperson, Bello Kurya. The accused members were allegedly attempting to create confusion within the House through an unauthorized gathering, prompting Tsafe to propose their indefinite suspension until a thorough investigation could be conducted by the House.

During the discussions, several members of the House, including Rilwanu Anka, Hamisu Nassarawa, and Nura Birni, voiced their opinions on the need for the House to take disciplinary action against the implicated lawmakers. Subsequently, after unanimous approval, Speaker Bi’yaminu Moriki announced the indefinite suspension of the eight members.

The suspended legislators are Bashiru Gummi representing Gummi One; Bashiru Bello Sarkin Zango, Bungudu West; Shamsudeen Hassan Basko, Mafara North; Faruku Musa Dosara, Mafara South; Amiru Keta representing Tsafe West; Ibrahim Tukur representing Bakura; Bashiru Masama representing Bukkuyum North, and Nasiru Abdullahi from Maru North.

The decision to suspend and investigate the implicated members underscores the Assembly's commitment to maintaining order, discipline, and the integrity of its proceedings. The dissolution of all House Standing Committees further indicates a comprehensive effort to address any potential issues that may arise from the alleged attempt to disrupt the normal functioning of the legislative body.

As the Assembly proceeds with its investigation, the indefinite suspension of the eight lawmakers serves as a precautionary measure to ensure a fair and unbiased inquiry. The outcome of this probe will likely have implications for the affected members, highlighting the importance of upholding ethical standards within the legislative framework.
