The Nigerian Army has uncovered more than 40 illegal crude oil wells in the Rumuekpe community

The Nigerian Army has uncovered more than 40 illegal crude oil wells in the Rumuekpe community, situated in the Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State. The operation, led by Major General Jamal Abdusallam, the General Officer Commanding the Nigerian Army 6 Division, revealed the presence of approximately 40-foot-deep illegal oil wells, marking a novel approach used by criminals to extract crude oil from underground reservoirs.

Major General Abdusallam, addressing journalists following the operation, underscored the importance of this discovery in the ongoing battle against oil theft and illegal bunkering in the Niger Delta region. He expressed concern over the environmental and individual risks associated with the criminals' method, involving deep excavation to directly access crude oil deposits.

The General further emphasized that relevant authorities would be notified, and troops would be deployed to prevent further exploitation of the area. A number of suspects were apprehended at the scene and are currently in military custody to facilitate ongoing investigations.

One suspect, speaking anonymously, acknowledged that the wells were purportedly owned by various families in the community. Describing the perilous process of digging, the suspect highlighted the associated risks, such as gas inhalation and suffocation. The individual disclosed that those involved in the operation were paid approximately N40,000 per well excavation, underscoring the communal ownership of the resource and the dangerous nature of their activities. After the General Officer Commanding the Nigerian Army 6 Division, expressed the potential dangers posed by this method to both the environment and individuals involved. The excavation process, which involves deep digging, poses risks such as gas inhalation and suffocation.

This discovery underscores the need for heightened vigilance and coordinated efforts to tackle illegal activities in the oil and gas sector, ensuring the protection of natural resources and the safety of affected communities. Nigeria needs a high level of security.
