Atiku Abubakar, has advised President Bola Tinubu to adopt economic reforms similar to those implemented by Argentina's President

The 2023 Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has urged President Bola Tinubu to adopt the economic reform approach implemented by Argentina’s President, Javier Milei, to address the current economic challenges in Nigeria. In a statement titled "Argentina’s Javier Milei approach to reforms should serve as a lesson for Tinubu," Atiku compared the economic strategies of the two leaders, emphasizing the need for Tinubu to learn from Milei's success in repositioning Argentina's economy.

Atiku asserted that both leaders inherited disoriented economies but applied different measures for recovery. He pointed out that President Milei, who assumed office in December 2023, faced a worse economic condition in Argentina than Nigeria. However, Milei's proactive measures led to improvements in his country's economic outlook, and Atiku urged Tinubu to draw lessons from this.

Attributing Nigeria's economic challenges to President Tinubu, Atiku criticized him for not taking adequate action to address the issues. He emphasized that market forces respond to actions and inactions, and blamed Tinubu for the current state of the economy. Atiku dismissed Tinubu's tendency to shift blame to the opposition and his predecessor, describing it as needless and myopic.

Atiku highlighted President Milei's successful implementation of a comprehensive stabilization plan, which included cutting government expenditure, blocking theft of government funds, and attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) through concessions and improved ease of doing business. He contrasted this with Tinubu's approach, which, according to Atiku, involved building a large government, increasing ministers and ministries, and spending significant resources on house renovations for himself, his deputy, and the first lady.

The former vice president commended President Milei for sequencing his reforms and being prepared for after-reform shocks, sacrificing his own perks of office. In contrast, Atiku criticized Tinubu for not rolling up his sleeves to address the issues at hand, accusing him of blaming the opposition for his administration's failures.

Atiku expressed his attraction to the reforms in Argentina and highlighted the similarity between Milei's stabilisation plan and his own Recover Nigeria Plan. He offered to disclose details of his plan to the current government, emphasizing the need for clear-cut policies and pathways to economic rejuvenation led by sacrificial leadership.

In conclusion, Atiku warned that without effective policies and leadership-led sacrifices, discontentment, especially among the youth, may lead to protests. He urged Tinubu to adopt a more proactive and transparent approach to address Nigeria's economic challenges.
